“Keep your eyes open and stay awake, for you do not know when is the appointed time [kairos].” The parable tells of a master who has gone away leaving servants in charge and a doorkeeper admonished to watch. The master may return at any of the four divisions of the night (late evening, midnight, cockcrow, early morning), and he must not find them asleep.
